Travel

By Air:
The Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) is a 24-minute train ride to the Central district of Hong Kong. Buy a round-trip ticket for the train for HK$180, or buy single-trip tickets for HK$100 each.

By Car:
There is no need to commute by private car in Hong Kong.

By Taxi:
The airport and all major MTR stations along the MTR Airport Express Line have designated taxi stands where passengers can easily hire their own taxis (queues may be long). However, it is recommended that conference attendees avoid taking taxis directly from the airport into the city, as this is relatively expensive (typically more than HK$200 for a single trip). A taxi fare from the airport directly to the HKU campus costs around HK$330.

By MTR:
From your accommodation, if you are not at Robert Black College (located on campus; see below), find your way to the nearest MTR station. A full map of the Hong Kong MTR system can be accessed here. At any MTR station, you can purchase a reusable Octopus Card (deposit cost: HK$50), available at the station's Customer Service Centre, and then use this card to enter the Train platform area. On the MTR system map, find the Island Line and take the MTR to the HKU station (香港大學). Station map here:

MTR directions to HKU
Use Exit C1 Pokfulam Road (Chinese: 薄扶林道), ride up the elevator to floor G, exit and walk around the elevator stack, then up the escalator, and across the pedestrian bridge over Pokfulam Rd. (refer to image below). At the other end of this bridge, stop before the glass doors (do not take the escalators!), and take the elevators there up to the G level of the HKU Centennial Campus. At the top of the elevator, cross the bridge onto campus and directly in front of you is the building you want (Run Run Shaw Tower). Go through the "tunnel" under the building and up the escalators on your right to the 3rd floor (4th level up, Americans!). Look for signs to the Ultrafest venue in 3.04 CPD (Central Podium). (Do not get confused with Run Run Shaw Building, which is an older building on the other end of the campus.)

By Bus:
Citybus & NWFB busses may offer better commuting options to the conference venue if the MTR trains are overly crowded. However, commutes by bus are generally slower because of road traffic. Bus route info can be obtained from the Citybus website. These busses are the large, yellow-and-red, double-decker busses, not the fast, small green or red mini-busses (which require Cantonese speaking ability). When catching an approaching bus, you will need to wave clearly to the bus driver so that he/she knows to stop for you at your bus stop.
The nearest Citybus stop to HKU for southbound (NE to SW) routes is called "HKU West Gate/Haking Wong Building" (Chinese: 香港大學西閘 / 黃克兢樓). Southbound bus routes that stop here are: 4, 4X, 7, 23, 30X, 37A, 40, 40M, 71, 90B, 91, 970, 970X, and 973. From this stop, you will want to backtrack a bit and walk eastward to the tall elevator tower nearby. These are the elevators for the HKU MTR station's Exits A1 and A2. Take a lift up to Level G of the HKU Campus (see image below), and then at the top of the tower, cross the bridge onto campus, turn immediately right (ignore the nearby escalators), and walk westward along the University Street. Meanwhile, you can enjoy a stunning view of the Hong Kong Harbour to your right! You will eventually reach the Ground Level of the Centennial Campus, which has a large, grassy, shaded courtyard area. To the right, along the harbour-facing side of this inner courtyard area is an entrance to Run Run Shaw Tower.

By Foot (from Robert Black College):
Because Robert Black College is located just behind the HKU Campus, commuting to the Centennial Campus is a simple, 10-minute walk. From Robert Black, walk westward along University Drive until you see the Haking Wong Building on the right. Enter the student canteen area and exit on the opposite side of this area (facing the HK Harbour), and take the large escalator in front of the student canteen. At the top of the escalator, turn in the opposite direction of the escalator you just took and walk along the outside path until you reach shaded courtyard area of the Centennial Campus. Run Run Shaw Tower will be located to the right. A map showing the path from Robert Black Hall to the HKU Centennial Campus is shown below (the upper image only; the lower image is map with the reverse N-to-S orientation showing road access to Robert Black College from the Central District).
